Donald MacKenzie

MacKenzie joined the Danforth Center from his position as the Regulatory Affairs and Stewardship Leader of the Golden Rice Project coordinated by the International Rice Research Institute.  Prior to taking on this assignment, Dr. MacKenzie was a global registration manager and regulatory leader for Canada on behalf of DuPont Pioneer.  Over his career, Don has held government posts with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Research Branch, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and as head of Science Policy Division within Health Canada's Health Protection Branch. His proven track record of working with diverse stakeholder groups to achieve progressive policy outcomes has contributed to numerous US Agency for International Development funded agricultural biotechnology development projects that focused on working with governments, regulatory authorities, and biotechnology stakeholders to develop science-based policies and the professional capacity of scientists and regulators to conduct risk assessments.

Awards:In 2012, Don’s work as the founding Chair of the Emerging Regulatory Systems Project Team was acknowledged by CropLife International with the Leadership and Excellence in Agriculture, Ag-Biotech, and Food Issues Award for Global Priority Projects.  And, in 2013 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Royal Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for contributions to Canadian agriculture.
