Robots, Bugs, and Wide-Eyed Wonder: PlantTech Jam 2026 Was a Blast

On Saturday, March 7, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center opened its doors to curious learners of all ages, and the community showed up ready to explore.

PlantTech Jam, the Center's free, family-friendly STEM festival, drew a crowd of 901 attendees to Creve Coeur for an afternoon packed with hands-on science, face-to-face connection with real researchers, and more than a few moments of genuine wonder.

Science You Can Dig Into

From the moment families walked in, there was something for everyone. Young engineers crowded around the robotics stations. At the soldering table, visitors gathered to try their hand at fusing metals for the first time and walked away with a new skill. Nearby, others got their hands truly dirty, planting seeds and getting up close with wetland plants. And behind-the-scenes tours gave families a rare peek at our world-class research facilities, giving visitors a window into the research that’s working to change the world.

Danforth Center scientists stepped out of the lab and into conversation with the community, and it was a great opportunity—46% of attendees said they had never been to the Danforth Center before, and our scientists got to connect with the next generation. Whether explaining perennial root systems to a six-year-old or fielding questions about genetics from a curious teenager, researchers brought fun and accessibility to topics that can often feel out of reach.

Future Scientists in the Making

Perhaps no station captured the spirit of the day quite like the "Future Scientist Studio," where kids dressed up in lab gear and struck their best researcher poses for photos. It was playful, but also a small, powerful act of imagination: a child picturing themselves in a lab coat, doing something that matters.

Jude (left), age 9, came to PlantTech Jam from Oakville with his parents and sister. “I loved learning about photosynthesis!” Jude said.

Connor (left) and Jacob (right) came to PlantTech Jam with their mom (middle). “My favorite activity was making a corn bracelet,” said Connor, age 6. Jacob, age 8, was a big fan of plant propagation. “I liked ‘amputating’ the plants!” he said.

Aubrey (age 6) and Zoe (age 4) prepare to look at leaves up close. “This is our second time at PlantTech Jam,” said their mom Lindsey Bellini of St. Peters. “There’s something new every time. The girls love looking at all the cool stuff—and they’re learning real science!”

Experiences like these are exactly what PlantTech Jam is designed to create. By making science accessible, joyful, and real, the Danforth Center is planting seeds in the minds of the next generation of innovators. Thanks to all who came out!
