The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is pleased to announce Erica Fishel, Ph.D.; as director of technology transfer as of August 19, 2014.
In this role, Fishel will focus on expanding the Center’s intellectual property and technology transfer programs, as well as monitoring the Center’s research to identify and protect intellectual property that can be used to bring products to the market place.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to facilitate the rapid development and commercialization of healthy, sustainable technologies that will benefit agriculture and people worldwide,” said Fishel.
She will provide expertise for technology disclosures, legal protection strategies, preparation and prosecution of patent applications among additional aspects of technology transfer. Fishel will act as a liaison between scientific staff and the Center’s corporate partners to secure sponsored research agreements and licensing opportunities.
Upon finishing her Ph.D. in molecular plant biology at Washington University in St. Louis, Fishel joined Global Patent Group, an intellectual property law firm located at BRDG Park on the Danforth Center campus, where she served as a scientific adviser on ag tech issues.
Fishel holds adjunct professor positions at Washington University and Fontbonne University, both in St. Louis, and also is a freelance journalist working with the Botanical Society of America.
Prior to graduate school, Fishel worked as a biochemist at Sigma-Aldrich and got her start in plant science as an NSF-REU intern at the Boyce Thompson Institute.
In 2013, Center scientists filed seven U.S. or international patent applications on the mechanisms of defense against diseases, to increase the energy content of bioenergy crops and to increase the productivity of staple food crops in developing regions. Based on these and prior technologies, the Center closed or maintained nine licensing deals with for-profit companies.
