The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center celebrated the intersection of science and service at its 13th annual Plantasia Gala on October 25, 2014. More than 225 guests gathered to honor two individuals chosen to receive the Danforth Distinguished Service Award and Danforth Award for Plant Science.
“Our Science and Service awards recognize exceptional individuals who have had extraordinary impact,” stated Jim Carrington, Ph.D., president, Danforth Center. “This year, one has defined a forefront of science; the others have enabled the excitement of discovery to reach students and teachers in our schools. Our 2014 honorees, Jeff Dangl, and Derick and Sally Driemeyer, reflect all that we aspire to.”
Derick and Sally Driemeyer were presented the Danforth Distinguished Service Award which recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations that have been important partners in the development of the Danforth Center and in the advancement of St. Louis as an international center for plant science.
“Sally and Derick share my belief that plant science can benefit both the world and our community. They joined us early as friends and supporters but they soon zeroed in on our program for teaching children about plants and plant science. Our leaders and scientists view this responsibility very seriously; to educate young people in the science that can help understand and deal with major challenges to the future of the human family is important and rewarding,” explained Dr. William H. Danforth, founding chairman, Danforth Center.
“The Danforth Center is vitally important to plant science and continues to take great strides in plant research and enlightening the community. It is such a huge honor to be at a place where there are so many dedicated people and where other places seek to emulate. The Danforth Center is the go to place to drive innovation to solve problems,” stated Dr. Dangl. The Danforth Award for Plant Science was presented to Jeffery Dangl, Ph.D. The award recognizes a prominent national or international leader for outstanding achievement and service for the benefit of agriculture, food nutrition or human health.
A special thank you to those who made the Plantasia Gala possible, Plantasia co-chairs, committee members and sponsors.
