Before You Register
Thanks for your interest in being part of the Danforth Center’s World Food Day Commemoration. Before you register to become part of our team creating 200,000 nutritious meals, please note the following information:

Age Requirements
Children as young as seven can participate when accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult. The ratio of adults to children will vary according to age:

  • for children 7-9: the adult to child ratio should be 1 adult for every 2 children
  • for children 10-12: the adult to child ratio should be 1 adult for every 3 children
  • for children 13 and up: the adult to child ratio should be 1 adult for every 5 children

In each case, no person under the age of 18 may operate the sealer which closes the bags (which requires 2 adults): thus a minimum of 2 adults are required at each table!

Please note: The registration form requires the listing of participants’ ages if they are 17 or under. Any child 12 or under must register with an adult. If a child (13 or older) would like to register on his/her own, this will be permitted with the understanding that the child will be paired with a group which contains the required number of adults. For example, Joe, who is 14, registers on his own. Our system will add him to a packaging table which contains adults or a mixture of adults and children. He would not be added to a group consisting solely of other teens.

About Costs The approximate cost of a one hour packaging session is $30. Volunteers are asked to contribute a portion of this: $15/students; $20/adults. These tax-deductible contributions to the Danforth Center will be matched by other generous donors and sponsors so that the full cost of the session is ultimately covered.

Physical Requirements The one hour packaging session will be conducted while standing (for safety reasons, there can be no sitting on the floor and there is no room for chairs or stools at the tables so one will be standing for the full duration). It will be followed by a tour of the Center and its greenhouses, in which walking is required over varying surfaces. Please keep these physical requirements in mind prior to registering for packaging. If you would like to participate in the day but cannot stand/walk without support, those 15 and older can consider registering to be a Leadership Volunteer. Food Allergy Considerations Our package contains soy protein, rice and dried vegetables; those with allergies to these ingredients will want to refrain from participating.

More On Food The focus of the day is on feeding the hungry; for this reason, packaging volunteers should not expect to find food service available and should not bring food into the Center: no eating or drinking can take place in proximity to our packaging. However, at one point on the tour, guests will be able to sample cassava (a serving of 3-4 fried chips). Water is available from numerous drinking fountains throughout the Center.
