Alfonso Romo Garza was born in Mexico City in 1950. He is a graduate of the Institute Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, where he received a degree in agricultural engineering.
Mr. Romo founded Pulsar International in 1981 and has since nurtured the group's development and growth. Pulsar companies conduct business in more than 123 countries around the world, employing more than 20,000 people directly and another 100,000 indirectly. Pulsar operates in the agricultural biotechnology and packaging sector, in the non-banking financial services sector, and in the construction, distribution and information technology sectors. The group's annual sales exceed $2 billion.
Through Fomento Cultural y Educativo Pulsar, Mr. Romo supports a series of educational, cultural, and ecological activities, such as Duxx, Graduate School of Business Leadership and ARA organization which is devoted to the protection of endangered birds. Pulsar is also actively involved in the conservation of the Lacandona rainforest. Pulsar sponsors the Gran Premio Nacional de Arte Popular (National Folk Art Grand Prix Award) as well as the Concurso Nacional de Arte Joven competition.
Since 1994, Mr. Romo has been implementing an association program for small landowner-farmers and private investors, which has contributed to the farmer's social and economic well being. The success of this program has encouraged Mr. Romo to launch further ventures, which promise new and better economic opportunities for many families in Mexico.
Mr. Romo is a member of the World Bank's External Advisory Board for Latin America and the Caribbean and is currently on the Board of Trustees of several renowned national and international companies.
