Mission

The Program for Biosafey Systems (PBS) is a partnership program sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). In collaboration with its partners in Africa and Asia, PBS "addresses biosafety through an integrated program of research, capacity development and outreach." Jeff Stein, Biosafety Advisor in the Office of International Programs, implements the Regulatory and Technical Services component of PBS by providing training and consultative guidance to governments and public sector research and development institutes. PBS works in specific ways to assist in the development and implementation of effective biosafety policies and procedures, to strengthen existing capacity for conducting scientifically sound risk assessments, to foster science-based decision making, and to encourage regional collaboration and information exchange among stakeholders involved in biotechnology and biosafety.
