GOING GREEN!
With the establishment of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Center for Renewable Fuels last year, the Danforth Center is well-positioned to become a regional and world leader in research to improve the oil-production profiles of various plants as well as to adapt appropriate non-food crops for the economically sound, environmentally friendly production of safe and desirable biofuels. Learn more about the state of discussion surrounding plant-based biofuels by checking out the following links.

President Bush Addresses Renewable Energy Conference
President Bush recently attended the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference 2008. He spoke to attendees about his commitments to renewable fuel sources and outlined his administration's strategy for the future. For a transcript of his comments, click HERE.

Op-Ed Piece Adds Balance to News Coverage of Biofuels
Biofuels have received some bad press lately, but that coverage has not always done a good job of distinguishing between different kinds of biofuels or exploring their impacts very fairly. A recent editorial, "Bring on the Right Biofuels," contributed a voice of sanity to the matter. To read it, click HERE.

The United Nations has declared 2008 the "International Year of the Potato." Researchers at the Danforth Center are working to enhance potato crops by improving nutritional content and viral resistance to help combat hunger in Africa and other impoverished parts of the world. Danforth Center scientists are also working to reduce the production of harmful chemicals that can occur when potatoes and other starchy foods are baked or fried.

GOING GREEN…
In our October issue, OTV featured a section on "green building" with links to local green construction and design providers. We also invited readers to submit other companies. To view a list of additional suggestions, click HERE.
Even though temperatures have been unseasonably mild, it's not exactly farmer's market weather...or is it? For a list of winter markets where you can buy local produce in the (relatively) colder months, click HERE.
And speaking of mild temperatures...when seasons don't change will fashions have to? Is the fashion industry the latest victim of climate change? For more information, click HERE.

One of the Keynote Speakers at the 2007 Danforth International Fall Symposium was Dr. Jay D. Keasling. Dr. Keasling is a professor of chemical engineering and bioengineering at the University of California–Berkeley and serves as Director of the Physical Biosciences Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is one of the founders and leading experts in the area of "synthetic biology." To learn more about Dr. Keasling's work and the significance of this emerging field, click HERE.

GOING GREEN…
The Danforth Center hosted a conference on green building this month - and the Danforth Center itself has been featured as a "green building." Interested in building green - or what that means? Click HERE for more information.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to Bob Grant’s article on green labs in the June 2007 issue of The Scientist, chemical fume hoods can be one of the biggest energy drains in traditional laboratories. OTV sat down with Howard Beittenmiller, Director of Facilities and Support Services at the Danforth Center, to find out more about fume hoods. For more information about chemical fume hoods – and other varieties of biological safety cabinets – what they are, what they do, and how they figure into research at the Center, click HERE.

GOING GREEN…
The laboratory of Danforth Principal Investigator Dr. Ed Cahoon was recently dedicated as the Margaret S. and Blanton J. Whitmire Laboratory.  The Whitmires appreciated the work Danforth Center scientists like Dr. Cahoon were doing to produce safer, more nutritious pest- and disease-resistant crops as well as the resonance of these advances with Mr. Whitmire's legacy of emphasizing natural products and revolutionary methods of pesticide-application during his years in the Pest Control Industry.
