The apices of four acceptable but very susceptible cassava varieties
to bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv manihotis,
were used to produce in vitro plantlets. These plantlets were
acclimatized to natural conditions in pots. Rapid multiplication
technique was used to obtain large number of cuttings, which were
planted in field trials. The evaluation of the plants for aerial
diseases showed that plants were free of bacterial and African
cassava mosaic virus symptoms. Leaf spots caused by Cercospora sp.,
however, occurred 6 months after planting. The cuttings from these
healthy plants were used to establish cassava fields to serve as
source of planting material. This activity is on going in the
forest, forest-savanna transition and wet savanna zones of the
country. It is expected that, with time, the healthy material will
replace the infected material being grown by the farmers.
