The critical role of light in the tuberisation of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas) has been well documented. Exposure of tuberising roots to sunlight inhibits tuber growth while stems, which develop in the dark leads to the formation of stem tubers. The mechanism of such light effects, however, remains obscure. This paper reports on conditions, which result in the formation of stem tubers in cassava (Manihot esculent, Crantz) and suggests how it could be used as a model to elucidate the effects of light on gene expression on tuberising systems.
