Background research on potential
markets for the Global Cassava Development Strategy is updated and
refocused in this paper. It first presents a relative comparison of
the principal global cassava product growth markets, followed by a
detailed analysis of international starch markets, the main players,
source materials, products and recent dynamics. This is complemented
by a discussion on the trends and future potential for chips, fresh
roots and snack food trade. The second part of the paper identifies
and analyzes for each product group and market channel
biotechnology-based R&D interventions that could possibly create
and/or strengthen the competitive edge of the product in
international trade. The third part attempts to assess the numerous
implications these interventions could have, if successful,
regarding issues of small versus large scale farms, GMO versus GMO-free,
monetary returns to farmers and processors, and production,
processing and marketing systems. The paper concludes with a set of
questions that ought to be relevant to formulators of cassava
biotechnology research agendas.
