The NPLC meeting is a
valuable avenue for fostering scientific advances in plant lipid
research and biotechnology. This
meeting is the only one in North America that is focused on plant
lipid research. It is
held in an isolated setting that encourages extensive interaction
and discussion among its participants.
Because of the meeting’s specialized nature, the research
presentations and discussions are more in-depth than is possible at
a large conference. As
a consequence, most of the major plant lipid research labs
throughout the world are represented at the meeting, which is
attended by both established and young scientists.
In 2001, over 45% of the participants came from outside of
the United States, including 28% from Europe and 10% from Japan.
In addition to bringing together this distinctly
international group of researchers, the NPLC also offers an
excellent opportunity to bring together academic and industrial
researchers. In 2001,
over 30% of participants came from the industrial sector.
