The
Jaworski Lab:
Basic and Applied Approaches to
Modifying the Composition
of Oilseeds
Plant oils accumulate
in the seeds and provide both the
energy and carbon necessary for
a germinating seed to grow into a plant. Seed oils have a broad
variety of compositions. Although most seed oil produced around the
world is used for food, some unusual oils might also have useful
industrial applications. However, none of these unusual
oils is produced in an agronomically significant crop. Among the
major challenges facing plant researchers today is learning which
genes are responsible for producing an unusual oil. Once isolated,
such genes could be used to produce that unusual oil in a major crop
plant.
The focus of the Jaworski
Lab is research that will lead to a
better understanding of biosynthetic pathways and enzymes involved
with oil biosynthesis in plants.
The
