January 2009--St. Louis
BMGF grant to ensure the safety of nutritionally enhanced crops.

The Biosafety Resource Network was established to support the four project teams conducting research under the Grand Challenge #9 (GC9), a component of the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. While the goal of the research is to use the appropriate technologies to increase nutrients in local crops in a socially and culturally acceptable way, the responsibility of the BRN is to ensure that the individual projects conduct the necessary activities related to quality assurance, biosafety science and regulatory science.  These activities set the stage for delivering transgenic food crops that can improve the nutrition of people in the developing countries of Africa and Asia.

Objectives:
  • To assist the GC9 project teams to develop technical tools, best practices and quality control processes.

  • To provide consultative guidance to complete regulatory approval strategies and a plan for regulatory dossier development and to facilitate approval of confined field trial applications.

  • To provide expert technical resources to help the GC9 project teams generate early biosafety science data, ensuring that potential products will meet commercial standards.

  • To build biosafety/regulatory capacity in project locations through project-specific practical 'training in action' and mentorship.

  • To establish a comprehensive communications strategy that will deliver appropriately timed, consistent messages across GC9 projects and to respond to emerging issues arising from the activities of those projects.
