The
following are links to different programs and organizations that
work with the International Programs office or provide valuable
information about biotechnology.
Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving
both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral
forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements
and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and
information. We help developing countries and countries in
transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and
fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all.
International
Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA)
The
International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech
Applications (ISAAA) is a not-for-profit organization that
delivers the benefits of new agricultural biotechnologies to the
poor in developing countries.
It aims to
share these powerful technologies to those who stand to benefit
from them and at the same time establish an enabling environment
for their safe use.
Consultative Group
on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)
CGIAR is a strategic
alliance of countries, international and regional organizations,
and private foundations supporting 15 international agricultural
Centers, that work with national agricultural research systems
and civil society organizations including the private sector.
The alliance mobilizes agricultural science to reduce poverty,
foster human well being, promote agricultural growth and protect
the environment. The CGIAR generates global public goods that
are available to all.
International
Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
IFPRI's
mission is to provide policy solutions that cut hunger and
malnutrition. This mission flows from the CGIAR mission: "To
achieve sustainable food security and reduce poverty in
developing countries through scientific research and
research-related activities in the fields of agriculture,
livestock, forestry, fisheries, policy, and natural resources
management." Two key premises underlie IFPRI's mission. First,
sound and appropriate local, national, and international public
policies are essential to achieving sustainable food security
and nutritional improvement. Second, research and the
dissemination of its results are critical inputs into the
process of raising the quality of the debate and formulating
sound and appropriate food policies. IFPRI’s mission entails a
strong emphasis on research priorities and qualities that
facilitate change.
Council for Biotechnology
Information
The Council for
Biotechnology Information communicates science-based information
about the benefits and safety of agricultural and food
biotechnology. Its members are the leading biotechnology
companies and trade associations.
Plant biotechnology is already helping provide the world with
more and better food while protecting the environment. And this
new technology holds even more promise in the future. That means
better quality of life for real people with real appetites and
real needs. The Council for
Biotechnology Information is committed to bringing you the facts
about these exciting new developments — complete with footnotes
and hyperlinks to scientific research and other information.
That’s our pledge to be a credible source of information about
plant biotechnology.
International Institute
of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)
IITA's mission is to enhance the food security, income, and
well-being of resource-poor people in sub-Saharan Africa by
conducting research and related activities to increase
agricultural production, improve food systems, and sustainably
manage natural resources, in partnership with national and
international stakeholders.
International Center for
Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
CIAT is a not-for-profit organization that conducts socially and
environmentally progressive research aimed at reducing hunger
and poverty and preserving natural resources in developing
countries. We refer to the products of this research as
"solutions that cross frontiers," because they transcend
national boundaries and other barriers as well.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Bill and Melinda Gates believe every life has equal value. In
2000, they created the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help
reduce inequities in four primary areas.
Through its
Global
Health program, the foundation works to close the
gap between rich and poor countries by encouraging new research
and supporting healthcare organizations that reach people most
in need. Our
Education
program seeks to ensure that all students in the
United States graduate from high school ready for college, work,
and citizenship. Our
Pacific
Northwest program assists vulnerable children and
families in Washington state and the greater Portland, Oregon
area by supporting housing, early learning, and other community
service programs. And our
Global
Libraries program strives to give people in the
U.S. and other countries access to information through free
Internet access at public libraries.
agbios
Agbios is a Canadian company dedicated to providing
public policy, regulatory, and risk assessment expertise for
