Dear colleagues,

The purpose of the Caulimoviridae DataBase is not to replace GenBank, but to provide all the sequence information about plant dsDNA viruses in a useful and friendly-user manner to a maximum of plant virologists interested in these viruses. The basic information is normally available in Gene Bank and in EMBL, but we present all the sequences complete and/or gene by gene and/or virus by virus, in order to facilitate rapid access to the needed information. In addition, we decided to provide some information about genomic organization and characteristics and phylogenetic trees based upon nucleic acid alignment and several category of amino-acid sequences. This information can be very valuable for people who do not have access to gene banks, or do not have the time to gather all the required information.

If you want to refer to the sequences published in this database, you could indicate;

Kochko de, A. (1997). The Caulimoviridae DataBase, International Laboratory for Tropical Agricultural Biotechnology (ILTAB/TSRI-ORSTOM). Version 97/1.

In addition to sequences we provide general information on the two genuses Caulimovirus and Badnavirus.  These pages are copied from the book "Sixth Report on the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses" by F.A. Murphy, C.M. Fauquet, D.H.L. Bishop, S.A. Ghabrial, A.W. Jarvis, G.P. Martelli, M.A. Mayo, M.D. Summers (eds.) (1995), Archives of Virology/Supplement 10, 586pp. Springer Verlag, Wien New York. We also added a short bibliography, of course not exhaustive, which will be updated from time to time. Finally, some figures of genome comparison and phylogenetic trees are also presented.

The Caulimoviridae  sequence DataBase is structured by Genes and Viruses. We still kept the two genera Caulimovirus and Badnavirus until the new genera adopted by the Executive Committee of the ICTV (May 10-11 1997) will receive names. Only CsVMV has its own folder.

When you have access to a sequence file, it is either copied from GenBank with all the usual information or it is a homemade file without detailed information.

For all the ORFs, or genes, you will find both nucleic (Seq.) and amino-acid (Pep.) sequences.

In the case of the folder providing the sequences virus by virus (Viruses. Seq), there is information for  viruses and strains or isolates of viruses.

All suggestions to improve, complete and update the Caulimoviridae  DataBase are welcome. Please write me at iltab@danforthcenter.org
