The
strategies of technological innovation developed by Corpoica have
allowed production scale-up of clean seeds in projects aimed at regional
and agroindustrial development. Specific
zoning for the development of the production programs responds to
biophysical and socioeconomic approaches, looking for strategies that: a)
respond to clearly identified productive limitations, b) present high levels of adaptation to the local and
regional conditions and that promote the development of productive
nuclei, with small farmer's community participation, women groups and
other agents of the productive chain.
These processes of regional scale-up aim to: a) increase yields in commercial varieties, b)
reduce production costs and c) reduce environmental impacts by agrochemicals.
The absence of production programs for clean seeds have
influenced the competitiveness of the production systems; conventional
seed being the main factor for dissemination of pests and diseases.
Corpoica has carried out participative selection of potential
genetic materials followed by lab introduction and indexing, clonal
propagation, hardening, multiplication of súper-elite seed and
production of elite seed through local operative groups.
These strategies have linked nearly 2 500 producers and an area
of 6 000 Ha in the Caribbean and 3 000 Ha in the Andean region of
Colombia.
