Dr. Herman has a BA (1973) in Biology from
the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa
Barbara, A MA (1975) from UCSB working with
Dr. Beatrice M Sweeny on circadian rhythms
in dinoflagellates. He obtained his Ph.D.
from UC San Diego working with Dr. Maarten
Chrispeels. He was a postdoctoral fellow
with Dr. Max Delbruck at Caltech (1980-1)
and Dr. Leland Shannon at UC Riverside
(1981-3). He was an Assistant Research
Biochemist at UC Riverside (1984). He was
then employed by the USDA/ARS from 1985-2008
located at the Beltsville Agricultural
Research Center (1985-2001) and at Donald
Danforth Plant Science Center (2001-8). He
is presently a member of the Donald Danforth
Plant Science Center. Dr. Herman is an
Adjunct Professor of Plant Science at the
University of Missouri, Columbia (plantsci.missouri.edu/faculty/herman).

Dr. Herman has been a visiting scientist
at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot Israel
as an ARS Fellow working with Dr. Gad Galili
(1994-5) and as Japanese Society for
Promotion of Science fellow at Tokyo
Metropolitan University with Dr.Tako
Minimikawa (1997). He served as Program
Director of the NSF Cellular Signaling and
Organization programs (1996-7) and as a
Science Fellow at the US Embassy in
Stockholm (2005). He has served as an
editorial board member of Plant Physiology
and Planta (1994-date) and as Associate
Editor of Journal of Experimental Botany
(1996-date). He was awarded the USDA's
highest award, the 2004 Plow Award from the
US Secretary of Agriculture for his work on
food allergens. He was promoted to
Supergrade in the USDA in 2008. He is a National Fellow of the
Explorers Club and serves on the board of
the Explorers Club St. Louis Chapter that is
a partner of the Donald Danforth Plant
