Ralph Quatrano Ralph Quatrano

Ralph S. Quatrano received his B.A. from Colgate University (1962) and Ph.D. in Biology from Yale University (1968). He held Professorships and founded the Center for Gene Research at Oregon State University (1968-86) and was Research Manager in Molecular Biology at Dupont (1986-89). He was the first John N. Couch Professor of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1989) and also served as Chairman (1992-1997).

He was appointed a Reviewing Editor for Science (1991-98) and Editor-In-Chief of Plant Cell (1998-2003). He has been on the Boards of plant science based companies and institutes. He has received teaching awards and has served as advisor for more than 20 graduate students and 40 postdoctoral fellows.

Since 1998, he has been the Spencer T. Olin Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis and recently served as Director of the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences (2005-2007).

His research interests center on the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling cell polarity and the control of gene expression during abiotic stress. He has authored over 154 research articles and routinely presents his findings at major meetings, Universities and research institutes.
