Soybean is the second most widely grown crop in the United States and the number one oilseed crop in the world.  The annual production of soybeans in the United States has increased by over one million bushels during the past twenty-five years, but the bushel price received by farmers has changed little in this time period. My research is aimed at increasing the value of soybeans by genetically enhancing the storage components of the seed. A particular focus of my research is the modification of the fatty acid  and antioxidant composition of soybean seed oil to make it better suited for human and livestock nutrition and for industrial uses.

My laboratory is also participating in a collaborative research effort to characterize the biosynthesis and function of
sphingolipids in Arabidopsis.
