Hugh Grant
President and Chief
Executive Officer
Monsanto Company
Monsanto's businesses
include foundation seed and seed
brands such as DEKALB, Asgrow
and PBI Cambridge; Roundup
herbicide and other crop
protection products; new plant
improvement traits such as
herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready
corn, cotton, canola and
soybeans; Bollgard
insect-protected cotton and
YieldGard insect-protected corn;
and the Posilac dairy business.
In addition to these businesses,
Mr. Grant is also responsible
for the strategic planning and
development of new growth
platforms from investments in
genomics, biotechnology and
other technologies applied to
agricultural, food, and animal
production systems. Monsanto
became a 100-percent publicly
traded company focused
completely on agriculture
following the spinoff from
Pharmacia Corporation in August
2002.
Prior to his appointment as
president and CEO of Monsanto in
May 2003, Mr. Grant served three
years as executive vice
president and chief operating
officer with overall
responsibility for leading the
operations and performance of
the commercial seed, chemistry
and biotechnology traits
businesses inclusive of sales
and marketing, information
technology, distribution and
manufacturing worldwide.
Mr. Grant joined the former
Monsanto Company in 1981 in
Scotland, and spent the first 10
years of his career with
Monsanto's agricultural business
in a variety of European sales,
product development and
management responsibilities. In
1991, he relocated to St. Louis
as global strategy director of
the agriculture division and was
responsible for global
management of the Roundup
herbicide franchise. In 1995, he
was named Monsanto's managing
director for the Asia-Pacific
region, where he had
responsibility for the company's
agriculture, nutrition and
pharmaceutical businesses in
Southeast Asia.
In 1998, Mr. Grant was named
co-president of the company's
agriculture division, where he
jointly oversaw global business
operations and led the business
and product strategy. In this
role, he also formulated the
long-term business strategy that
led to an integrated product
portfolio platform of chemistry,
seeds and biotechnology traits.
Mr. Grant is a board member of
the International Policy Council
(IPC) on Agriculture, Food and
Trade; a member of the executive
committee of the Microcredit
Summit Campaign; an
international advisory board
member of the Scottish
Enterprise; and a 2001-2003
board member of The United Way
of Greater St. Louis.
Born in Larkhall, Scotland, Mr.
Grant earned a bachelor's of
science degree in agricultural
zoology with honors at Glasgow
University. He also earned a
post-graduate degree in
agriculture at Edinburgh
University, and a master's of
business administration at the
International Management Centre
in Buckingham, United Kingdom.
