Board of Trustees

John F. McDonnell
Retired Chairman of the Board
McDonnell Douglas Corporation
John F. McDonnell retired as
Chairman of the Board for
McDonnell Douglas Corporation on
1 August 1997. He was named
Chairman in 1988 and retired at
the time of the merger with The
Boeing Company. McDonnell led
the company successfully through
the early 1990's when the U .S.
defense budget and the aerospace
markets were shrinking
dramatically. In the face of a
rapidly consolidating aerospace
industry , he oversaw the merger
of McDonnell Douglas with Boeing
to create the world's largest,
broadest, and strongest
aerospace company.
McDonnell began his career at
McDonnell Aircraft Company in
1962 as
a strength engineer, and in 1968
became vice president of
McDonnell Douglas Finance
Corporation.
He was elected staff vice
president-fiscal in the
corporate office in 1971,
corporate vice president-finance
and planning in 1972, a member
of the McDonnell Douglas board
of Trustees in 1973, corporate
vice president-finance and
development in 1975, and
executive vice president in
1977.
McDonnell was elected president
of the corporation in 1980, and
became chief operating officer
in 1987. He was named chairman
and chief executive officer in
1988, a position he held until
September 1994. From then until
his retirement, he was Chairman
of the Board.
McDonnell earned bachelor's and
master's degrees in aeronautical
engineering from Princeton
University.
